Achilles tendonopathy is a common overuse injury that results from things like walking, running and jumping. Achilles tendonopathy often results in pain, scar tissue formation and degeneration of Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon connects the plantaris, gastrocnemius and soleus muscles to the calcaneous. Risk factors for tendinopathy include overuse, abnormal calcaneal alignment, history of injury and obesity.
Treatment for Tendonopathy
Recommend following the R.I.C.E. Guidelines
Rest: Limit weight bearing on your to unload damaged tissue.
Ice: To reduce swelling and inflammation in the joint. Do not put ice directly on the skin and do not ice for longer than 20 minutes as it can cause frost bite.
Compress: To reduce swelling and improve joint stability. Compression should not be to the point that it is uncomfortable.
Elevate: To reduce swelling in the joint.
Calf Stretch: Place your hands flat against a wall. Put the unaffected leg forward and bring the affected leg straight back placing the heel on the floor. Lean into the wall until you feel a stretch in the affected leg. Stretch 3 times with 30 second holds.
Physical Therapy can Help
A physical therapist will create a specific treatment program to speed up and improve recovery. Physical therapy treatment may involve soft tissue release, joint mobilization, kinsiotaping, therapeutic exercise and stretching. Physical therapy has been proven to improve recovery from tendonopathy.
